The early Civilization on-screen hint system, familiar to many players, was not infallible. If a man is on a river tile, he can step to another river tile using only one-third of a movement point, thus seeing much more country per turn. A bit of movement by each will show what inland tiles are available. You will now see several new tiles and may be ready to choose a colony site, although you are likely to need another turn or two.ĭon't disembark your other man at the same place unless sure that it's good enough for your first colony.

Use an arrow key to move him onto an unoccupied river tile if any, or as near westward as you can. Right-click on the ship then click the chosen man he will then blink showing that he's ready to move.

If one or more shows a little coastline along an edge or at a corner, continue straight ahead for one move to see more land, or do a right-angled turn if the only land in sight requires that.Īs long as you are adjacent to at least two contiguous land tiles that do not contain a colony or native settlement, prepare to send a man ashore: preferably your military man if you have one. If you reach the icebound borders, turn west (or restart: you may have wasted too much time and be at a serious disadvantage compared with other nations).Īt each step, look at the five newly discovered tiles. Heading for the polar regions carries a higher risk of sailing for several turns without sighting land. Then, one step at a time, move initially due west (so as to see five new tiles instead of the three you would see if going northwest or southwest) then if you get a turn or two of no sightings maybe go north or south towards your chosen destination. Decide whether you want the middle or a semi-polar position. Use the minimap at bottom left, pressing "minus" as many times as necessary to reach the "total map" view, to work out where you are. but hey, I am doing it in a video game. Some players want to find land near the middle of the map - as in chess, control of the centre has advantages. They all include a virtual mass of casualties.Īfter playing Assassin's Creed: Odyssey for a few hours, I wonder how many people that were just guarding some random place I had murdered. Not sure why Colonization is any more violent and 'ick' as any other strategy game. The colonizers simply sped up the process. Side note I have seen recently posts from native American ancestors who point out the tribes were constantly killing each other off. We shouldn't shy away from such knowledge, and try to learn to not do horrible things in the future. I love playing older games, but Colonization was one of the only games I had trouble getting myself back to play due to the ick factor of playing as a colonizing power after learning more about how horrific that period of time actually was.History is filled with terrible things. Quoting: Deleted_UserThat being said i think that a Colonization Game should say a word or two about History of the Native Americans during the Colonization Era nowadays. I think I used to have an older version, like 0.1 or 0.3 probably from 20ish years ago, but I must have gotten rid of it or it is on an old hard drive. I never participated in the project, but I used to love Colonization back in the day, and this game was one I was excited about. I just checked my Projects/SourceCode directory, and I have fcca-0.8.0 in there (around 2008?), mainly to study. They did also have another release towards the middle of last year if you missed it that added in music, animated rivers, improved performance, plenty of art updates and more. Much better stability (many bug fixes).Greatly improved artificial intelligence (AI) for the computer players.Major changes to the tile goods production so that the actual values matches the original game. Some of what's new in the 1.0 release include: Games are never actually truly finished huh?

20 years in the making for this Sid Meier's Colonization remake!Įven though it's technically finished, the team behind it say they plan to continue upgrading the game and FreeCol 2.0 will have many features added towards what they and players imagine "Colonization 2 would have been".

Took a while huh? It's not quite as well-known or as loved as some other free and open source games, but worth pointing out: FreeCol 1.0 is out now.
